Coach’s Playbook: GPS Device Health 101

If the car battery powering a GPS device dies, you can’t track your asset.
If the cell signal is lost due to the vehicle being out of range, you can’t track your asset.
If an improper install gives you a weak GPS signal, you can’t track your asset.

These situations would all receive penalty flags in the game of football which ultimately means you need to go back to the playbook to create your game-winning strategy. So how do you prevent these penalties?

A GPS vehicle tracking system is vital to your business as it enables you to monitor the health of every device, as well as the vehicles in which they’re installed. Before you can track and recover your dealership’s assets, you need a properly installed, connected and powered GPS device. And a solution from a leader in the industry, not some cost-cutting, fly-by-night provider.

In developing the current generation of our GoldStar GPS tracking solution, our team developed the capabilities needed to address the top three issues that occur frequently with most GPS devices. Our software was built to serve-up a ton of valuable information, including device health. Presented within an easy-to-read map-based user interface, our system gives you instant, at-a-glance views of key device health indicators including GPS signal reception, cell phone coverage and vehicle battery life levels.

With instant access to this information, you can be proactive and make smarter, faster decisions that keep you connected to your vehicle and recover them quickly if it becomes necessary.

Here’s what the device health indicator can tell you about your devices and vehicles:

  • Battery Life – If the battery life is showing as low, it means that the GPS tracking device could stop working soon, leaving you unable to track and easily recover a vehicle. This information allows you to alert the customer, let them know their battery life is low and encourage them to come in for a new battery.
  • Cell Signal – A low signal could mean that the vehicle is in a very rural or remote area and out of good cell phone range. This is something you need to know as soon as possible, especially if you’re trying to recover a vehicle that has otherwise had a strong signal.
  • GPS Signal – When a device is first installed, this will really come in handy. A weak signal indicates that the device wasn’t installed properly and isn’t connecting to GPS satellites. You may need to check and make adjustments. If you need help, we have a nationwide network of certified experts who will come to your location for installs.

With our Device Health Indicator, you’ll never have to wonder if your GPS tracking devices are in tip top shape. And if there’s ever an issue with a device, you’ll be able to see what’s causing it and quickly take action, saving you time to move on with your day (without the call to customer service!).
