The Capitol Christmas Tree

Track the Capitol Christmas Tree with Us!

Spireon is pleased to announce that we are the sponsors of CapitolTreeTracker.com, a site that allows you to track the progress of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree via real-time GPS location tracking by FleetLocate as it makes its way from the Carson National Forest in New Mexico to Washington, D.C.

The tree is selected from a different national forest each year and stops in cities along the way to the capitol. The tree will start its journey on Nov. 11, and arrive in D.C. on November 24. You can follow every step at CapitolTreeTracker.com. Plus, you can see information about each location on the route.

The Capitol Christmas Tree Tradition

The tradition of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, or “The People’s Tree,” began in 1964 when Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John W. McCormack (D-MA) placed a live Christmas tree on the Capitol lawn. This tree lived three years before succumbing to wind and root damage.

In 1970, the Capitol Architect asked the U.S. Forest Service to provide a Christmas tree. Since then, a different national forest has been chosen each year to provide “The People’s Tree.” This national forest also works with state forests to provide companion trees that are smaller Christmas trees for offices in Washington, D.C.

Capitoltreetracker.com provides real-time GPS location tracking of the Capitol Tree using FleetLocate by Spireon’s advanced trailer management technology. The site will allow you to follow along as the tree makes its way from the Carson National Forest in New Mexico to the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
