It’s not often that a lifesaving opportunity arises in the GPS Fleet Management arena, but we’re glad that when it did, not once but twice, FleetLocate rose to the occasion.
We heard from Byron Van Zandt of Tejas Distributors recently, and he had two interesting stories to tell.
Locating a driver in crisis
First, he said they had an instance when they could see one of their best drivers had not started his vehicle when expected.
“After trying to reach him on his cell phone, with no success, we were able to zoom in on the Spireon interface and get the hotel he was staying in,” Van Zandt said. “We contacted the hotel, and they went to the room and found him nearly in a diabetic coma. The paramedics came and were able to solve the situation. So, we thank God that Spireon was able to help us save a life.”

GPS and cavalry to the rescue
On another occasion, he said they had a driver flip his van and trailer and roll into a ditch during an ice storm in an area where there is very little cell phone coverage.
“We were able to find out through terrible phone calls that the driver was shook up but okay,” Byron related. “Then Spireon helped us get a tow truck to the exact spot of the accident.You can’t put that in a brochure, but it is one of the many unwritten advantages of what Spireon brings to the table,” he added.
“Every month I get a call from a Spireon competitor wanting our business,” Byron said. “Being a prudent manager of this part of our operations, I get their information and offers. They all have ways to ‘prove’ they are better, they all have ways to offer products we have no use for. The action and quick response we have gotten from Spireon over the years is unbeatable.”
